Hey guys, I’m just going to apologize in advance if you’re not into dance music, because I chose a couple that are pretty much straight poppy, club bangers (See “Fire” & “Metaphysical”)! Full disclosure: I love club bangers. I did also include some tracks that are more akin to what you’re used to hearing weekly on LRDC, and the first I’ll feature is “Memory” by a bloke named Albert Ryan. After doing some research, it appears he’s a electronic music writer & producer out of Jersey and he also dabbles in hip hop, producing a record more focused on the latter in 2012. For the track above, of which he’s offering a free download on his Bandcamp, it’s straight, unadulterated synth beauty! Let his silky smooth electro-wave take you on a ride down the PCH!
Probably one of the most buzzed about new music from last week was new Santigold! I’m not sure how this woman does it, but her songs are all so uniquely “Santigold,” which means it’s a little bit odd, yet they are so approachable. “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” certainly follows suit with this winning formula that she has concocted. I would say this song has some of the best replay value on this weeks list, so if you haven’t put it on your own workout playlist or “get ready to rage” playlist, now would be the proper time to get that done. Talking about buzz, we can basically say this was “Grimes Week!” Every music site has exploded over the long awaited full length “Art Angels” and now that the dust has settled (and P4K has given their ever-predictable “Best New Music”), let’s talk about MY favorite track. It’s “World Princess part II”! Why? It’s a track that sounds like it’s already been remixed by a world renown producer and this saves the world time and cuts out the middle man. We can just get straight to the sick beats and not get quite so swept into the unintelligible moan-singing that we’ve become used to hearing from Grimes.
Quick question, which is the best piece in chess? Queen? Hell no, it’s the Bishop…okay, it’s not, it’s actually the Queen. But hey, I’ve given the “Bishops” some love on this weeks list. You have not one but TWO Bishop songs. Take note, that these are two separate artists. The first, stylized BISHØP, has provided her vocals and teamed up with another dj/producer, BYNON. This particular track is a remix by Gianni Kosta and takes a fun and glitchy track and makes it even more funner and glitchier. The second Bishop track is a super heavy hitter with the help of some 808s, hi hats, and some dub claps, which catches you off as it swells from a relatively subdued start.
Let’s kick off some honorable mentions:
Oberhofer – “Ballroom Floor” – For the past couple years, I’ve heard from Oberhofer here and there and have enjoyed everything I’ve heard from them. I’ve just never gotten deep enough to dive into their music, but the song on this week’s list is the perfect gateway track to suck you into their newest release, “Chronovision”. If you have had an Oberhofer block like I have, and this track has broken through that, you’re welcome.
Autograf & Janelle Kroll – “Metaphysical” – Electro-indie three piece Autograf have put out this FIRE track and absolutely blown me away. Their combination of soft drum beats and what sounds like a wooden xylophone synth (?) mixed with electric piano and modern textures just works for me and reminds me a bit of every single thing I love about Deadmau5’s remix of “You & I.”
PAPA – “Hold On” – This band is kind of a mysterious for me for a very random reason. I somehow ended up on their mailing list about 3 years ago and actually ended up really liking their music. Their newest track, “Hold On,” is a great alt-rock anthem that could possibly launch their career, with the perfect sound to fill a stadium, much like Brandon Flowers and The Killers.
Have a great night everyone,
