LRDC #THIS Week New Music Playlist 3/15/16

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

Hello! Are you ready for a doozy of a playlist?

The song to start off the list comes from a band named Brett and I must say, I really like the name. As a beer fan, it’s an ingredient that is near and dear to my heart. All of that aside, it’s a four-piece and not a single member is named Brett. Luckily their music makes much more sense. The song “Claire Drained” is pure vibes and is off their upcoming sophomore release entitled “Mode.” Be on the watch for these guys, because they’re killing it. With the popularity of Grimes, other artists who have the airy ambient sounds like her have been able to thrive. Negative Gemini is one such act in my mind. It’s 100% Electronica. Next up is a new song from Brit’s The Boxer Rebellion. These English bands are really killing it and they are really slipping under my radar. Apparently The Boxer Rebellion has been doing really well for a while, and with music like “Big Ideas,” it’s no wonder why.

One band that has not slipped under my radar is Peter, Bjorn & John. They’re back with a new song called “What You Talking About” and have brought the heat with an all-star cast of veteran producers who have worked with Adele, Paul McCartney & Beck (possibly a project for the three? I’ll speak to their people about it). I featured an Empress Of track on this list a while ago and it was the first time I had heard her. Well after hearing much more of her, I like every single thing she has done and this is very much included. “Woman is a Word” is a swelling, synthy, and percussion hit and truly instills her in my mind as “the real deal.”

Producer/Singer RYAN Playground has teamed up with veteran producer by the same name, Ryan Hemsworth on this track, “Folders.” It’s sure to get the mood right. Keeping the same feeling, I have a track from Mt. Si called “Oh” and it paints the most elegant soundscape that blends playful synth and drums with what sounds like wind chimes and breezy vocals. Moving onto more synth, we’ve got a buzzy track from French producers, Fevrier called “La montagne.”

If you follow my lists, you know I don’t only throw on electronic indie, and like to throw in some more traditional jams that just strike a (literal) chord with me. This next song “Vertigo Flowers” from Nothing really knocks it out of the park with gritty guitars and a ton of mini breakdowns that get my heart racing. Another indie rock track comes from Joywave off of a new release entitled “Swish” (extra points for jacking Kayne’s rejected album name haha). This song is a small departure from their poppy synth we saw on some of the singles on their last album, but I really enjoy it.

Okay, next up, let’s get it bouncing a bit, your head, your foot, literally anything that can move. This track from Soft Lit is the tits and I cannot even get close to enough of it. The noises that I’m hearing are way different, yet so familiar and the vocals from Tara fit perfectly.

Switching gears completely, we have a new song from VÉRITÉ that features a couple crass words and themes, so I apologize in advance. Seriously though guys, this is one of the most intimate songs I’ve heard in a very long time. The way she delivers the lyrics, cadence and emotion is just so gritty and real. I got a bit swept up into it and this is definitely my new guilty pleasure song. Going on to a bit heavier yet every bit as intense, we have a song from Marsbeing that combines pretty much every single texture, sound, synth imaginable. There is a ton going on, but it comes out in a cohesive manner and manages to have movement to it.

Doing it in a much  different way, ANOHNI has a wonderful way of being different from everything out there. The music you’re hearing isn’t so much blazing new trails, but his vocals are just something to marvel at. Silky smooth and rich vocals is truly his forte and I’m excited to hear more tracks from this guy. And that brings us to our closing track which I have saved just for you. It’s another appearance from an LRDC favorite of mine, San Holo and this time featuring a vocalist called The Nicholas. Much like the track from San Holo last week, this one kills it so hard. He truly is an artist when it comes to entrancing beats, textures, and samples. Hopefully there’s another new track for me to feature next week from him. Guess you’ll have to check back to find out!

LRDC #THIS Week New Music Playlist 12/15/15

Tuesday, December 15th, 2015

Let’s start this week’s playlist with a bang. And by bang I obviously mean copulation. What else can you expect to happen while listening to a song called “Body Talk.” Cannons is a synth heavy outfit hailing from Los Angeles and I can ensure you their catalogue is every bit as good as the track I’ve featured this week. The song pulses in waves of airy vocals and choppy guitar riffs. Truly a thing of beauty and something that should be enjoyed in an intimate space with the one you love.

Great segway into ANOTHER amazing song by DIIV. Following up their breakout debut, “OSHIN”, DIIV is primed and ready to continue making waves (water pun intended). “Under the Sun” is as approachable of a track as you could expect from the lofi genre and excels in that field immensely. This song offers up the perfect soundtrack to your next surf sesh, coastal drive, or just leisurely drive. Speaking of that, another track to follow you on these adventures would be Wondr’s “I Learned”! While this is not a new song, it’s probably new to you, so let’s not get caught up on semantics. It’s absolutely entrancing and pretty much everything I look for in a song. Heavy swells with simple drum samples and soft vocals. If you follow along with my blog, I’m obviously preaching to the choir because this is what you love as well.

With the new 007 movie coming out very recently, what better song is there to promote than one named after one of the films of the past. “Moonraker” by Chrome Sparks hits as hard as their name implies…but not too hard. It has a great balance to it of synth we’ve come to see of late inspired by the 80’s and the soft keys we loved in the late 2000’s. Yet it’s all very current, very new, very mysterious. It’s a long song by any definition with several movements that keep you sucked in for the entire time.

Let’s switch gears and focus on the young phenom, Trevor Powers, or better known as Youth Lagoon. This guy has been absolutely killing it. Fresh off his beautiful release, “Savage Hills Ballroom,” he’s not done with 2015 yet and released “I’ve Seen.” A raw, gritty piano-driven song that explodes into a full band that could easily narrate a coming of age tale. For me, everything this guy has been touching is absolute gold and I hope you agree with me that this song is no exception to that.

Okay everyone, are you ready? It’s another new song from Chairlift called “Romeo.” I can’t even explain to you how excited I am to hear the full release from this duo! Their past two songs have been the most fun songs I’ve heard in a long time. They’re the kind of songs that if they’re on, it doesn’t matter who you are, you wouldn’t dare to change away. That is saying a TON

Let’s get to some honorable mentions this week:

Frankie Cosmos – “Young” – Perhaps it’s the voice, maybe the title, maybe her name, but something about this is just sooooo authentic and I love it. It’s been stuck in my head the past week and I needed to share it with y’all.

Miike Snow – Heart is Full (ft. Run the Jewels) – I don’t really need to say much more than that. I’ve been absolutely loving this new ish from Miike Snow and adding Run the Jewels just absolutely killed it in my mind. It’s perfect and fits like a glove.

High Highs – “Boxing” – So if you didn’t know already, I love KCRW (89.9 in Los Angeles) and they influence my list heavily. This is a band that they feature pretty often and I really love their sound. They have a very big sound for a two-piece and really are a breath of fresh air in the folk/indie rock scene without completely venturing into the pop-scene.

Have a great week, friends!
