LRDC #THIS Week New Music Playlist 4/19/15

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

Hello ladies and gentlemen! Last week was a great week for us here…and this week will not leave you disappointed either. We get started off hard with an intensely sick track from UK duo Plaitum. Of course, don’t feel bad if you hadn’t heard of them before this week, I hadn’t either, but boy am I glad these guys are in my life. This song haunts me in the best way possible. The next two songs are also synth bombs from HOST and Terror Jr. The latter is quite on par with songs I like to feature on here and trying to find out more about them served to be difficult. With one song, I’m itching for more already, so hopefully that comes sooner rather than later.

So, Boyz Noize is back, and this time with indie-pop darlings Polica. This track is like more like my favorite Polica track than a Boyz Noize song since it doesn’t go harder than hard, but listening to his newer music, it seems like that’s the direction he’s going. I’m down either way. I have a song by Vancouver BC duo HUMANS on this list and while it isn’t the version that is 9.5+ minutes, I think you owe it to yourself to check that one out. It’s total fire!

You know I always end with heat as well. We have a track from Sibling called “Westside” which reminds me of why I live on the Westside of Los Angeles: “the vibe is right”. AAAAND closing it out is a flowery romp of a song that is pure fun from NVDES. Full disclosure, any song that has gang vocals of people yelling lyrics is basically a winner in my eyes, but this song really nails everything so well. Whistling in the middle of the song?! Yeah! That’s not someone eavesdropping on that sick you’re listening to, NVDES is just foreshadowing what you’ll be doing by the end of the song.

Enjoy,

Greg

LRDC #THIS Week New Music Playlist 2/2/16

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016

Hello boys and girls and welcome to this week’s LRDC New Music Playlist. I’m going to shorten this post up as the past ones no doubt take you and me a ton of time to get through. Let’s do this.

Starting off we have some crazy chill new jams from Lewis Del MarAquilo. The former comes from a duo out of NY and has been buzzing for a while leading up to a new EP coming out 1/15. Aquilo is no stranger to our site and his newest cut, entitled “Best of Us”, I think may be my favorite song he’s dropped yet! A bit more poppy, we have a single from Pete Yorn that was released last week that really stuck with me!

Getting a bit more raw, check out the track from Abi Reimold. In her entire album, she’s able to create the perfect unkempt sound that unfolds into a cohesive and incredibly honest album. Another returning artist to our list is Nap Eyes, who holds down the chill in “Lion in Chains” and reminds me a bit of Phosphorescent. While the next track may start off chill, it certainly builds into a straight banger. I heard this Grandtheft track on my commute on CBC Radio 3 and was so down for it, I didn’t have words.

Bibio showing up in strong, funky form this week with “Feeling” off his upcoming LP coming April. It’s been great hearing what this guy has been producing. If you want to hear one of his older tracks, make sure you check this out! Keeping up the vibes, this track from Stillhound called “Shy” isn’t necessarily new-new, but it’s freaking sick and will be stuck in your head for the next month, I promise you that. Going a bit darker, we see HÆLOS with another new track off of their upcoming release. They share a bit of the deep mysteriousness with Purity Ring and have oodles of synth textures that plays in and out with soft, luscious vocals.

Back again in strong form, we have a new song from Bishop, and it’s entrancing. Much like her past track “Wild Horses”, “River” surely delivers on the intensity and further establishes her as a small artist who is destined to stay around for a bit!

Los Angeles outfit, Harriet has a ton of great things going for them. They have a bit of a .fun vibe mixed with Passion Pit. These comparisons are completely genuine but they have a great new, yet not unfamiliar sound. I’m excite to see where these guys go! Also, I’m super excited for new music from a favorite of mine, Savoir AdoreThis track has so much to it and at times it’s here and there yet it feels so intimate. ANNNND, another band I’m stoked to hear more of is Islands! After some radio silence for a couple years, they are getting ready to drop not one…but two albums!!! Who do they think they are? Beach House? I love it, and I’m so excited to get neck deep in all these new tracks!

Proving that moody, almost ambient, instrumental music is not boring, Explosions in the Sky has the equation all worked out. Complex and gripping, “Disintegration Anxiety” takes you on a journey with playful plucked notes & heavy, earth-shaking drums. It’s a masterpiece! These guys are a bit different and so is the last artist, Jessy Lanza, and she absolutely rocks it. It’s poppy, yet it’s experimental and a bit synthy. Signed to Hyperdub, Jessy has a similar sound to Grimes (a contemporary of hers) yet does it in a much more minimalistic fashion. This is the first track we have heard off of her upcoming release and I’d love to know what you think of it!

Thanks y’all and enjoy the rest of your week,

-Greg

LRDC #THIS Week New Music Playlist 11/17

Tuesday, November 17th, 2015

This week is such a treat for you and you don’t even know it yet, but you’re about to! We have some BIG returns from some bands we haven’t heard from in a minute. The first and most important is going to School of Seven Bells with new music coming from one half of their band, Alejandra Deheza. After losing Benjamin Curtis, her good friend and bandmate to lymphoma, it’s hard to deny that this music that will be released going forward means a ton to Alejandra and the fans (including me). Getting to the track, it’s exactly what you would expect from SVIIB and while their music is often emotional, this is will really tug at your heartstrings and “you’ll fall in love again.”

Okay, pull yourself back together, I’m so sorry to start you off on such a down note! Let’s steer from the sad and focus on the hopeful, and this will come in the form of a new track from The Big Pink called “Hightimes.” This is the first new music we’ve seen from the English duo since 2012 and I’m absolutely stoked. The first song I heard from them is a banger, and while this doesn’t hit quite as hard, it’s freaking beautiful and I love it.

I’ve been prone to man crushes and oftentimes they aren’t even based on looks. Oftentimes they are based on the amazing thing that I’m hearing the man produce. One such example of this is Rostam Batmanglij (I know, winner of the sickest name ever, right), and his several projects. Some you may have heard of, like Vampire FREAKING Weekend and a personal favorite of mine, Discovery. He has teamed up with Ra Ra Riot (like he did for Discovery with Wes Miles) to make a silky smooth track called “Water.” I’m also fully aware that I always feature some sort of track that has to do with water, but maybe this is what makes them amazing, you ever think of that? Excited to hear from both of the contributing parties to this song as this may be the closest I’ll get to Discovery for a while.

Honorable mentions are as follows:

Givers – “Bermuda” – This band is it, they have such a dialed in sound with a great mix of synth, unique percussion, all with a traditional rock band set up. Looks like this is their first new music since 2011 and as I’m finding them just now, I have to say “it’s about damn time.” I would really love to see them perform their stuff live.

Bibio – “Petals” – Bibio has now made it back to the list. I actually had to into the wayback machine to see that I had actually posted on them in ’14. The same sentiment I have for him still stands, the music this man produces I can only compare to a beautiful painting full of texture and color.

Classixx ft. T-Pain – ” Whatever I Want” – Chill, islandy synth with the auto-tune king himself on the track? I’d call it a winning combo AND Classixx is from Los Angeles, so good ish all around! This one is going to be in my rotation for a LONG time.

Missy Elliot ft. Pharrell Williams – “WTF (Where They From)” – New freaking music from Missy??? She’s still got it!

Enjoy, party people!

Bibio – Anything New

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014

CRUNCHY GOODNESS! The intro to this amazing track is long and entrancing. British producer Bibio (Stephen Wilkinson) certainly has some talent. His music is influenced by the likes of Boards of Canada (haven’t listened to them enough to comment on this) and Daft Punk (this is evident in the last third of the song). I first heard this song on our local NPR station in LA during one of their bits and it’s stuck with me. Hopefully it sticks with you and I’ll gladly take any “thank yous” below. Enjoy.
